Las Grietas Independently

Las Grietas is a scenic gorge where freshwater and seawater meet, and is a popular spot¬†for snorkelling on Santa Cruz.¬†Throughout the town of Puerto Ayora, signs advertise tours to Las Grietas- but don’t fall for it! It’s perfectly possible to visit Las Grietas independently, for a minimal cost.

We rented snorkel gear in town for $4, and took a water taxi from the jetty for just 80c. When the taxi dropped us off, we walked the short distance along the easy-to-follow trail to reach Las Grietas, which was completely free to enter.

It’s a nice spot to snorkel, although you probably won’t see much marine life other than fish. Local kids meet here to jump from the rocks to the water below (though this is officially discouraged). From the entry point, you can swim through the gorge, passing through an underwater tunnel (or scrambling over the rocks).
